The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that clubs eliminated in the preliminary rounds of its two major interclub competitions—the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup—will receive a $100,000 solidarity payment, equivalent to approximately UGX 370 million.
The move is aimed at providing financial support to clubs that take part in continental football but exit before reaching the lucrative group stages.
For Uganda 🇺🇬, Vipers SC and Kitara FC will carry the country's flag in the upcoming continental campaigns. Their participation will give both clubs an opportunity to compete against some of Africa's leading sides while also benefiting from CAF's new financial support structure should they be eliminated at the preliminary stage.
The confirmed solidarity fee represents a significant boost for clubs, particularly those from leagues where resources are comparatively limited. The payment could help participating teams offset some of the costs associated with continental football, including travel, accommodation, player logistics and match preparations.
For Vipers and Kitara, the continental assignments will therefore carry both sporting and financial significance. Progressing deeper into the competitions would bring greater rewards, while even a preliminary-round exit would now come with a guaranteed $100,000 (about UGX 370 million) solidarity payment under CAF's framework.
Ugandan football will be hoping that both representatives can make the most of their continental opportunities and advance beyond the preliminary rounds.
