Ugandan football icon Emma Okwi πΊπ¬ has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career that saw him represent some of the biggest clubs in Uganda, East Africa, North Africa and Europe.
Okwi, widely remembered for his pace, movement, finishing ability and big-game performances, leaves the game as one of Ugandaβs most recognizable forwards of his generation.
The strikerβs career took him across several countries and footballing cultures. He began making his name in Uganda, where he featured for SC Villa, one of the country's most historic clubs. His performances earned him opportunities to move abroad, beginning a long and successful journey across the continent and beyond.
Over the years, Okwi went on to play for several notable clubs, including Simba SC and Yanga in Tanzania, where he competed at the highest level of East African club football.
He also had spells with Tunisia's Γtoile du Sahel, Egypt's Al Ittihad Alexandria, Rwanda's Kiyovu SC and AS Kigali, as well as Danish side SΓΈnderjyske. His career also took him to Iraq, where he represented Erbil and Al-Zawraa.
His most recent chapter came with AS Kigali, before the experienced forward decided to call time on his playing career.
While his club career was extensive, Okwi's contribution to the Uganda Cranes πΊπ¬ remains one of the defining aspects of his legacy.
Okwi made 95 appearances for Uganda, scoring 28 goals for the national team β numbers that place him among the country's most accomplished international forwards.
His international career included memorable moments in major competitions and crucial matches, with Okwi often relied upon to provide attacking threat and goals when Uganda needed them most.
