Former BUL, Bright Stars & Busoga United Goalkeeper Mulabi Sanoni Battling Cancer

Former Uganda Premier League goalkeeper Mulabi Sanoni, popularly known as “90,” is currently admitted at the Mulago Cancer Institute, where he is undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with cancer.

The development has sparked concern among members of Uganda’s football fraternity, with supporters, former teammates and clubs expected to rally behind the experienced goalkeeper during what is undoubtedly a difficult period in his life.

Sanoni has enjoyed a career spanning several Ugandan clubs, including BUL FC, Busoga United and Bright Stars, and has been a familiar figure in the country's top-flight football for several years.

His career has seen him compete at the highest level of Ugandan domestic football. In April 2019, Sanoni was the goalkeeper for Kirinya-Jinja SS, now known as Busoga United, during their 1–0 defeat to BUL FC in the Jinja derby.

He also featured for BUL FC, where his performances between the posts earned him recognition in competitive Uganda Premier League fixtures. In November 2019, for example, Sanoni produced an important goalkeeping performance against Kyetume, including saving his side from further danger after a penalty opportunity.

His association with Busoga football also extended beyond club football. Sanoni was selected for the Busoga Province squad for the FUFA Drum, highlighting his standing among goalkeepers from the region. He was listed alongside other prominent goalkeepers in the provincial squad.

More recently, Sanoni continued his professional career with Bright Stars, making appearances in the Uganda Premier League. Records from the 2024/25 campaign show him featuring in several league matches, including starts against Lugazi FC, Express FC, Mbale Heroes and Vipers SC.

Now, however, the focus has shifted away from football and towards his health and recovery.

The news that the former goalkeeper is battling cancer has prompted calls for support, prayers and encouragement from the football community. Having spent years representing different clubs and entertaining supporters on the pitch, Sanoni now faces perhaps the toughest challenge of his life away from the football field.

At this difficult moment, the Ugandan football fraternity can play an important role by standing with the goalkeeper and his family, offering encouragement and any appropriate support as he continues his treatment at Mulago.

Everyone in the football community wishes Mulabi Sanoni a successful treatment and a strong recovery.
