As the Uganda Premier League enters its final matchweeks, the stakes could not be higher. With a maximum of 30 matches in the season for most teams, the battle at both ends of the table is reaching a fever pitch. From a fierce four-way title race to a frantic scramble for top-flight survival, every single goal in the upcoming fixtures will have massive ramifications.
Here is a breakdown of where things stand and what to look out for in the next round of matches.
At the summit of the table, Vipers currently hold the destiny of the championship in their own hands, but the chasing pack is breathing down their necks.
Vipers (1st Place, 61 PTS): Holding a 3-point cushion at the top, Vipers are the clear favorites. However, their next fixture is a tricky away match against Maroons (10th). A draw or a loss here could blow the title race completely wide open.
Kampala City / KCCA (2nd Place, 58 PTS): KCCA remains the most immediate threat to Vipers. They face a tough away test against URA SC (11th). KCCA drastically needs a win to keep the pressure on, while hoping Maroons can do them a favor against the league leaders.
Villa (3rd Place, 55 PTS) & Kitara (4th Place, 54 PTS): While Villa is not scheduled to play in this specific fixture block, Kitara faces a grueling away match against BUL (8th). Both teams are mathematically still in the hunt but require the top two to stumble significantly.
Per the league regulations, only the bottom two teams (15th and 16th places) will be relegated to the Big League at the end of the season. With UPDF sitting just above the drop zone in 14th place, a high-stakes survival battle is unfolding.
Current Relegation Zone & Safety Margin:
--------------------------------------------------
14. UPDF | MP: 28 | PTS: 21 | GD: -16
--------------------------------------------------
15. Calvary | MP: 28 | PTS: 17 | GD: -27 (Relegation Zone)
16. Buhimba | MP: 27 | PTS: 15 | GD: -42 (Relegation Zone)
The stand-out fixture of the relegation battle is the direct clash between UPDF and Calvary.
If UPDF wins, they move to 24 points, effectively sealing Calvary’s fate and taking a massive step toward safety.
If Calvary pulls off an away victory, they close the gap to UPDF to just one single point, setting up an absolute grandstand finish for the final games.
Sitting rock bottom with 15 points, Buhimba is in severe jeopardy. However, they hold a critical game in hand (27 matches played compared to everyone else's 28). They face a daunting away trip to Mbarara City (12th). Nothing short of a win will suffice if they are to keep their faint survival hopes alive.
While the spotlight shines brightest on the top and bottom, the mid-table matches offer plenty of tactical intrigue.
Police (7th) vs. Entebbe UPPC (6th): Separated by just two points, this local battle is all about securing a top-half finish and potentially chasing down 5th-placed NEC FC.
Express (9th) vs. Lugazi (13th): Express will host Lugazi in the late 19:00 kickoff. Express will look to solidfy their top-10 standing, while Lugazi aims to mathematically guarantee they stay well clear of any late relegation surprises.
