Uganda Premier League side UPDF FC have strengthened their defensive department with the signing of promising defender Derrick Kato on a two-year contract.
Kato joins the army side from Kampala Regional League outfit Kisugu United FC, making the move an important step forward in his developing football career. The transfer is part of UPDF FC’s continued efforts to identify and promote emerging Ugandan talent ahead of the new campaign.
The young right-back arrives at UPDF with valuable experience gained from different levels of Ugandan football. Before making the move to the Uganda Premier League, Kato featured for Kisugu United, where his performances helped attract attention from clubs operating at a higher level.
Despite coming from the regional league, Kato is not without experience on the bigger stages of Ugandan football. He has featured in the Masaza Cup, representing Ssingo during their impressive run to the 2025 final. Ssingo finished the competition as runners-up, giving Kato valuable exposure to high-pressure and competitive matches.
Kato has also made his mark in university football. He represented St. Lawrence University in the University Football League and played an important role as the institution reached the final at Wankulukuku Stadium before losing to Uganda Martyrs University. His involvement at university level further added to his competitive experience and development as a defender.
His football journey also includes formative spells with Kitende Junior Team and Smark, experiences that helped him develop his defensive qualities and gain exposure to different levels of the Ugandan game.
The move to UPDF represents a major opportunity for Kato to make the transition from regional football to the professional game. The Uganda Premier League presents a significantly higher level of competition, with faster-paced matches, stronger opposition and greater tactical demands.
For UPDF, the signing provides an opportunity to add youthful energy and potential to the defensive ranks. Kato's background in the Masaza Cup and University Football League means he already has experience playing competitive football, while his time in the Kampala Regional League has given him a strong foundation in the domestic game.
