The wait is finally over. The 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season kicks off today, Friday, August 28, with reigning champions Vipers SC hosting Entebbe UPPC FC in the opening fixture of the new campaign.
The highly anticipated encounter is scheduled for 8:00 PM at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, with the match set to usher in another season of top-flight football in Uganda.
For Vipers, the opening fixture provides the perfect opportunity to set the tone for what will be another demanding campaign as the Venoms seek to retain the league crown and add to their growing domestic dominance.
Vipers SC go into the new season as the reigning Uganda Premier League champions after successfully defending their title during the 2025/26 campaign.
The Kitende-based side secured their eighth Premier League championship after defeating Maroons FC 3-0 at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, to seal the title.
Their dominance last season makes them one of the obvious favourites heading into the new campaign. However, a new season brings new challenges, and Vipers will know that every opponent will be determined to knock the champions off their perch.
The Venoms have already demonstrated their readiness for the new campaign by winning the FUFA Super Cup, defeating Kitara FC 3-1 at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo. Odili Chukwuma opened the scoring before Abdulkarim Watambala and Gusto Mulongo struck in the second half to complete the victory.
That triumph has given Vipers an early piece of silverware and further underlined their ambition ahead of the league campaign.
Standing in Vipers' way are Entebbe UPPC, a side that enjoyed an impressive return to Uganda's top division last season.
The Printers finished fifth in their first season back in the Premier League under experienced coach Abdallah Mubiru, an impressive achievement that raised expectations ahead of the new campaign.
However, starting the season away to the defending champions represents one of the toughest possible assignments.
Entebbe UPPC will need to be disciplined defensively, remain compact without the ball and take advantage of any opportunities that come their way. Their strong showing last season should nevertheless give them confidence that they can compete against the country's established giants.
The two sides are no strangers to one another, having met twice during the previous Premier League campaign.
Vipers dominated the most recent meeting, recording a 3-0 victory over Entebbe UPPC on April 26, 2026.
That result will provide Vipers with additional confidence, although Entebbe will be eager to produce a much stronger performance when the teams meet again.
With both clubs beginning a fresh campaign, previous results will count for little once the referee blows the opening whistle.
Vipers captain Milton Karisa has insisted that the Venoms are prepared for the demands that come with being champions.
Karisa says the squad is ready for the pressure as Vipers begin their campaign against Entebbe UPPC, with the team looking to translate their preparation into a strong start.
The captain's leadership will be important throughout a season in which Vipers will have to balance domestic ambitions with their continental commitments.
