The stage is set, the rivalries are renewed, and the pulse of Buganda’s grassroots football is beating faster than ever. The highly anticipated Buganda Masaza Cup tournament is officially scheduled to return, promising a thrilling campaign of cultural pride, unparalleled passion, and top-tier talent development.

The tournament organizers have laid out the roadmap for the season, which begins with a grand administrative launch before the physical action takes center stage on the pitch.

The Launch and Kickoff Timeline

The road to the championship will officially begin off the field at the heart of the Buganda Kingdom, followed closely by a high-stakes opening fixture.

  • The Official Launch (June 10th): Before a ball is kicked, the tournament will be officially launched at Bulange, Mengo—the administrative seat of the Buganda Kingdom. This prestigious event will gather kingdom officials, sponsors, team managers, and cultural leaders to map out the logistics and unveil the official plans for the tournament.

  • The Grand Opener (June 13th): Three days after the launch, the physical football action will ignite. The opening match will kick off in Buweekula, where the host team will welcome a fierce competitor to set the tone for the entire season.

Understanding the Groups (Amasaza Clusters)

The 18 traditional counties (Amasaza) of Buganda have been meticulously divided into three competitive groups of six teams each. Named after historic landmarks and titles within the Kingdom—Bulange, Muganzirwazza, and Masengere—these groups ensure regional battles and balanced competition across the board.

Here is how the 18 counties stack up across the three groups:

1. Bulange Group

A powerhouse group featuring perennially strong contenders and fierce footballing communities

2. Muganzirwazza Group

Named in honor of the historic Queen Mother of Buganda, this group brings together a fascinating mix of tactical heavyweights and rising underdogs

3. Masengere Group

This cluster features a highly unpredictable lineup of historical giants and ambitious dark horses, promising some of the most contested matches of the preliminary stage

What Makes the Masaza Cup Special?

Established as a cornerstone of the Buganda Kingdom's sports calendar, the Masaza Cup is far more than just a football tournament. It serves as a vital platform for scouting elite youth talent in Uganda, having previously unearthed national stars like Farouk Miya and Arafat Usama.

A Cultural Celebration: Beyond the goals and points, the Masaza Cup fosters unity, clan pride, and youth empowerment. Matches across the counties draw tens of thousands of passionate fans, culminating in a grand finale that is traditionally graced by His Majesty the Kabaka (King) of Buganda.

With Buweekula getting the honor of hosting the opening ceremony on June 13th, the countdown has officially begun. Will the regional giants dominate, or will a new underdog rise to take the crown? The journey to find out begins at Bulange, Mengo on June 10th.
