A Historic Night for Ugandan Football

Matchday 28 of the FUFA Big League 2025/26 season will be remembered as one of the most significant days in the competition's recent history. Kigezi Homeboyz FC and Blacks Power FC have both been confirmed as promoted to the Uganda Premier League, earning the right to compete in the country's top flight for the first time. Eight fixtures played across 16th and 17th May 2026 sealed fates at the top and bottom of the table.

Kigezi Homeboyz FC: Champions and History Makers

Under the astute stewardship of head coach Sadick Ssempigi, Kigezi Homeboyz FC has achieved something the club has never accomplished before — promotion to the Uganda Premier League for the very first time in their history. The achievement marks a watershed moment for football in the Kigezi sub-region, as the club etched their name into the history books with a composed and dominant campaign across all 28 matchdays.

The moment of confirmation could not have been more fitting. In the biggest match of the season — a top-of-the-table showdown against fellow promotion contenders Blacks Power FC at Kigezi Al Madina — it was Dominic Abonga who delivered the decisive blow. The forward scored both goals in a commanding 2-0 victory, his brace not only settling the tie but also confirming Kigezi as league champions on goal difference, with both sides finishing the campaign level on 51 points.

Dominic Abonga's match-winning brace against Blacks Power was the perfect symbol of Kigezi's season — clinical, composed, and delivered under the highest pressure. Coach Ssempigi has masterminded a remarkable campaign that has now culminated in the club's greatest ever achievement.

Blacks Power FC: Promoted Despite Final-Day Defeat

Despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to Kigezi in the title decider, Blacks Power FC had already done more than enough across the season to secure their own promotion. Finishing second on 51 points — level with champions Kigezi but separated by goal difference — Blacks Power have earned their place in the Uganda Premier League alongside their regional rivals. Their 15 wins across the campaign was actually the highest win count of any team in the division.

Relegation Battle: Four Teams Face the Drop

At the foot of the table, four clubs are staring at relegation. Mbale Heroes FC finish bottom in 16th place with just 17 points — a gap of 12 points to the next club — and a catastrophic goal difference of -45 after suffering a 6-point, 6-goal deduction. Their 7-0 thrashing by Young Elephants on the final day summed up the scale of the crisis.

Soltilo Bright Stars FC (15th, 29 pts.), Kaaro Karungi FC (14th, 30 pts.), and CATDA FC (13th, 31 pts.) complete the quartet of clubs who face an uncertain future in the lower tier. Bright Stars' 0-2 home defeat to Ntugasaze on the penultimate matchday proved especially costly.
